Joan Keen, a resident at Shannon Court in Hindhead, has celebrated her 100th Birthday with family and friends at the care home.
To mark the special milestone on Friday 13 July, staff at the Home organised a buffet lunch for Joan and all the residents. Joan received a card from the Queen and was visited by her daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren who brought cake, balloons and old photos of Joan.
Joan was born in 1918 and grew up with her parents in Basingstoke. The family would often holiday in Skegness in Lincolnshire, staying at The Lincoln Hotel which belonged to her aunt and up to today, Joan has found memories of her time there.
Joan met her first husband Norman in 1941 and they were married in 1942. During World War II, she worked as a secretary at the Rural District Council until 1943 when she left to have her daughter Ann. Whilst Norman was serving in the Army, Joan and Ann lived with her parents in Basingstoke. In 1964, Joan married her second husband, Douglas. Today, she has two grandsons and many great grandchildren. She has been living at Shannon Court since April 2015.
When asked what her secret was to a long life, Joan says: “It’s in the genes.” Indeed, Joan’s mother lived to the age of 98.
